The Case of the Disappearing IndustryTHE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING INDUSTRY
" Where have they all gone, Holmes?" " Elementary my dear Watson, they became extinct!" Well, not quite extinct - but pretty close to it! The industry I am referring to is retail photo processing (RPP). My name is Mike and I have been in the industry for over 25 years, my wife and I have owned our own business for the last 16. The RPP was once a profitable and rewarding business to be in. Long standing relationships with both customers and suppliers meant that life was good - you had to be on your toes though to keep ahead of the competition. Customers valued your expertise and experience and were happy to pay a fair price for the services received. We employed staff who shared our passion for photography. Along came the first wave of digital cameras. It was the beginning of the end for RPP as we knew it although the appalling quality of the images might have indicated otherwise. Fast forward to the present day. Take a look around your neighbourhood shopping precinct. A reasonable sized community may have had two or three camera shops doing photo processing - how many are there now? Where I live in Australia RPP has suffered a reduction of around 75% in the last 4 years. Digital images are being captured in record numbers. Home printing has become attractive to many who do not realize that the images are very likely to be seriously degraded by ink instability. The big home electrical stores have convinced a big chunk of the population that 15c is the fair price for a 6x4 print (the fact that it is produced with minimal correction by the guy that was selling vacuum cleaners last week seems to be wholly irrelevant). So the little guy battles hard to remain viable but eventually has to concede that his race is run and its time to re-assess priorities. In my case I"m still in business but I needed to diversify into a field that that was not disappearing up its own fundamental orifice. I needed to find an opportunity to work odd hours around the existing business. I worked at nights delivering newspapers to newsagencies around my area. I enjoyed it but the pay wasn"t great and it took a toll on my lifestyle. Purely by chance I discovered an opportunity to seriously augment my earnings with just a few hours work each week. If you have a need similar to mine then I urge you to seriously consider doing something about it now! Visit my site at www.work-at-home-future.com I have set out for you there the opportunity that saved my butt! Autor: Mike Spurr
