The Wonder of Kauai

The most northern of the Hawaiian Isles, Kauai sports 550 square miles of land, bursting with tropical beauty and natural heritage. Being one of the oldest Hawaiian Islands, Hanalei on the North shore is one of the earliest towns known to have been settled in by Pacific explorers.

Kalapaki is one of the more popular destinations of Kauai, being the centre for transportation and business but also holding the world famed Kauai Museum. The Kauai Museum holds extensive exhibits relating to geology, flora, fauna and extensive artefacts from the missionary and plantation periods. There is further information about life on a plantation in the Grove Farm Homestead Museum. Once the plantation home of George Wilcox, this homestead has been preserved to demonstrate life on a sugar plantation for all future generations to visit, and experience a form of living history.

Kalapaki beach is perfect for relaxing after a day at the museums with its white sands and beautiful blue waters. There is also featured nearby, an 18 hole Jack Nicklaus golf course nearby.

One of the strangest facts about Kauai is that of the wild roosters and hens roaming free around Hawaii"s garden island. Some say that Hurricane Iniki, 1992, destroyed a chicken farm which resulted in leaving the chickens to roam free. A more feasible story is that plantation workers in the 1800"s raised chickens for eating and fighting and let some go free.

For the movie fan you can visit Lumahai Beach where parts of the movie South Pacific were filmed. Various other movies producers have used the islands landscape to film, the initial scenes of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the remake of King Kong and Jurassic Park.

Kauai is used by many tourists to rest, relax, and some even chose to get married on the beautiful beaches.
